Kindergarten Number Sense Math Talk
Give your students time to actually play with the number 5.
Recreating Number 5 is a hands on Kindergarten Math Talk that moves number learning beyond tracing and worksheets. Students look closely at the numeral 5, recreate it using classroom materials, connect it to a quantity of five and explain how they made their representation.
Use cubes. Use buttons. Use loose parts. Use pom poms, stones, counters or crayons.
The materials can be simple because the mathematical thinking is the important part.
During the Math Talk, students explore questions such as:
What do you notice about the number 5?
How could you make its shape?
How can you show a quantity of five?
How are our representations the same or different?
These conversations give you a wonderful opportunity to hear what students already understand about number while helping them build stronger connections between numeral, quantity and representation.
