The Day My Mom Came to Kindergarten
Interactive Read-Aloud Lesson Pack

Celebrate everything your kindergarten learners already know with this playful, confidence-building read-aloud lesson!

Inspired by The Day My Mom Came to Kindergarten by Maureen Fergus, this lesson positions children as capable classroom experts. As students compare the perspectives of a child and a grown-up, they discover that everyone needs time, patience and support when learning something new.

After reading, partners choose a familiar classroom routine and use the included Teach-a-Grown-Up Mat to place the steps in order. One child takes on the role of the kindergarten expert while the other becomes the learner—and then they switch! Children practise giving clear directions, using encouraging language and helping without taking over.
