December Kindergarten STEAM Challenges

Bring purposeful, hands-on STEAM learning into your December classroom with five open-ended Kindergarten challenges designed for curious young learners. Children wonder, plan, create, test, improve and share while exploring structures, ice, magnets, trees, light and patterns.

The activities are inclusive, play based and adaptable. They use subtle winter inspiration without requiring holiday participation, making the resource suitable for a wide range of classrooms and communities. Assessment focuses on learner thinking, communication, testing and growth—not on creating identical products.

Five December STEAM Challenges

1. 3D Snowperson — plan, build and improve a stable three-dimensional structure using recycled, non-food materials.

2. Ice Sculpture — observe melting and freezing while arranging, joining and testing ice pieces.

3. Magnetic Bell Maze — investigate magnetic force and motion while designing and improving a safe tabletop maze.

4. Winter Tree Towers — build a stable branching structure using straws, playdough and reusable loose parts.

5. Light Pattern String — create, describe, extend and revise a repeating pattern inspired by lights.
